Kharan

Kharan is a district in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. Pakistan's second nuclear test was performed in the Kharan desert on May 30, 1998 with a miniaturized device yielding 60 percent of the Ras Koh Hills tests.

The district includes a single tehsil, administratively divided into nine union councils. The population of Kharan district was estimated to be over 234,400 in 2010

The state of Kharan was established in about 1697 as a vassal state of Kalat (princely state) until 1940.

On the 17th of March 1948, Kharan acceded to Pakistan and on the 3rd of October 1952 it joined the Baluchistan States Union.

The state was dissolved on the 14th of October of 1955, when most regions of the western wing of Pakistan were merged to form the province of West Pakistan.

When that province was dissolved in 1970, the territory of the former state of Kharan was organized as Kharan District of the province of Balochistan , Pakistan, later known as Balochistan.
